I’m tentatively starting out a new series of posts – as suggested by the blog title – about Final Fantasy XIV. As a long time (and until the last year, lapsed) Final Fantasy fan, the MMORPG was a long curiosity for me. I’ve done my share of MMOs in the past and found them too grindy, and no way in the world was I actually invested in these NPCs or the story surrounding it. As someone who broke CoH’s end-game trial/dungeon to under 30 minutes, I’ve helped with breaking games to their bare mechanics. This is not one of those series. (Not yet, anyway.) Final Fantasy XIV appealed to me on a story level and mechanics kept me going up and to this most recent expansion. I’ve fallen for this game hard. On a related note: please be kind to your healers. I’m fairly certain I developed carpal tunnel in a non-dominant hand (and destroyed one mouse) thanks to healing through that dungeon.
What I’d like to do in this series (as I rambled on my twitter) is give my basic impressions after playing character jobs to their (as of this writing) last level. At that point I’ve played them long enough to get a handle on their rotations, their strengths, and where they fit in the grand job and party role. Some I have the delight of doing the MSQ with, others, I’ve picked up off the side. I realize to an extent I’m making a Pleb Meta, but it’s not my intent. Each of these jobs have their bonuses and (while my first 80 is one I’m still gritting my teeth on) their roles in a team that definitely add to your overall cohesion, the post game stuff for others I might not be so excited by. But that is me.
A lot of it comes from me wanting to communicate my thoughts and impressions on the game without sounding like a complete utter dickface. I want to be able to explain my displeasure with certain things and not just go “this class is bad and (by assumed extension) you should feel bad about playing it”. I honestly loved playing my first class to 80 for the most part. There were just enough spots where the game mechanics fell through. And that’s spawned this outpouring of words.
So that’s that! There’s not much more I can say at this point that won’t give away my first class choice, and I’ll write about that here in the near future. Everything else that I’ll be touching (at least for the main part of this series) is still at 70 and I don’t get paid to do this just yet. I will probably stream more of this, however.
